Grand Egyptian Museum, Giza
The GEM is the largest museum devoted to a single civilization, built at a reported cost above a billion dollars on the Giza plateau about two kilometers from the pyramids. After years of phased openings, trial visits and gallery-by-gallery rollouts, the full public opening came on November 4, 2025, with the complete Tutankhamun collection, more than 5,000 objects, displayed together for the first time since their excavation a century ago, anchored in dedicated galleries beneath the museum's 36-meter statue of Ramesses II. Foreign-visitor tickets sit in the region of 1,200 to 1,450 Egyptian pounds for the main galleries, with Egyptian residents paying a fraction of that, and the official ticketing site is the only authorized sales channel. Two planning facts do the most work: the Grand Staircase and Tutankhamun galleries want a half-day on their own, and combining the museum with the pyramids same-day is possible but exhausting; the serious itinerary gives each a day.
Louvre Abu Dhabi and Saadiyat's museum district
Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by Jean Nouvel and opened in 2017 under a 30-year agreement with France, was the Arab world's first universal museum, and its strength is exactly that: galleries sequence world civilizations side by side rather than isolating regional art. Entry runs 63 dirhams, and the museum anchors Saadiyat Island's cultural district, where the natural-history-focused teamLab and the Abrahamic Family House sit within minutes. The district's long-planned Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, has been under construction on the same island for years; check current status rather than assuming openings.
Doha's museum quarter
Qatar's National Museum of Qatar, a Jean Nouvel design inspired by the desert rose, opened in 2019 and tells the peninsula's story through immersive galleries, charging around 40 to 50 riyals for foreign visitors. The Museum of Islamic Art, I.M. Pei's 2008 building on the Corniche, remains the region's single greatest collection of its field, manuscripts, metalwork, ceramics and carpets spanning Spain to Central Asia, with free or nominal entry. Together they make Doha the densest museum city in the Gulf for a short stay, reachable from the Souq Waqif district on foot or a short ride.

The Bardo and the Maghreb
Tunis's Bardo National Museum, housed in a 19th-century beylical palace, holds the world's largest collection of Roman mosaics and remains North Africa's most important classical museum; it closed Mondays and charges foreign visitors about 15 dinars. In Algiers, the Museum of Antiquities and the Bardo of Algiers hold the country's Punic and Roman collections in two Ottoman-era buildings. Morocco's museum landscape runs through the Musee Mohammed VI in Rabat for modern Moroccan art and the Dar Si Said in Marrakech for craft traditions.
Cairo's museum split
Egypt now runs a deliberate two-museum capital. The GEM holds the pharaonic blockbuster material at Giza; the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, opened fully in 2021, holds the royal mummies in climate-controlled halls and covers the full civilizational arc through Islamic Egypt. The old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square continues to operate during the transition, and its density remains an experience unavailable at the newer institutions. Visitors with two museum days in Cairo should split them Giza-Fustat rather than doubling up on either.

- Timing: Gulf museums run air-conditioned full days year-round; Egypt's museum days pair best with the October-April travel window.

- Combine: Saadiyat's museums share one taxi geography; Doha's two museums pair with Souq Waqif; Giza pairs with the pyramid plateau only if you start early.
One week, four cities
A museum-focused week in the region is now genuinely fillable. Two days in Cairo and Giza: the GEM's galleries and staircase on day one, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization's mummy halls and the old Tahrir museum's density on day two. Fly to Doha for a day and a half: the Museum of Islamic Art's collection at opening, the National Museum of Qatar's continuous interior in the afternoon, and the corniche and souq in between. Abu Dhabi deserves a full day for the Louvre's universal sequence plus one of the Saadiyat satellites, with the mosque at dusk. Tunis, for travelers adding the Maghreb leg, pairs the Bardo with the Carthage sites for a two-day classical immersion that no other city matches. The logistics are friendly: the Gulf and Cairo hubs interconnect hourly, and every one of these museums sells timed tickets online. What the itinerary reveals is the region's shift over two decades from a heritage destination you visited for the sites to one you visit for the buildings that hold them.
